EJ-610 6LiF powder for
thermal neutron detection applications.
|
| |
EJ-610 is a bright white free flowing powder manufactured
specially for use in thermal neutron detection appications.
It is formulated from reagents selected to have a minimum presense
of heavy metals which might be activated by a neutron field.
The Lithium is enriched to greater than 95 atom-percent in the
Lithium-6 isotope.
In contrast, natural Lithium contains Li-6 at 7.4
atom-percent.

|
Lithium fluoride is ideal as a source of Lithium since it
contains perhaps the highest Lithium content of any stable
Lithium compound.
It is insoluble in water and all common organic solvents
and is chemically quite stable.
The EJ-610 manufacturing process assures that the particle
size is sufficiently small to allow thetriton and alpha
particles produced from the
6Li(n,a)3H neutron capture reaction to efficiency
escape from the 6LiF particle and be detected.

The neutron cross section for the (n,a) reaction is 940 barns for thermal neutrons (0.025eV).
The neutron capture reaction is as follows.
